Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns are always on the lookout for new talent to bolster their squads, competing for top honours in the Betway Premiership, CAF Champions League, and CAF Confederation Cup.
Their involvement in these prestigious competitions demands that they stay active in the transfer market on a daily basis. With the Premier Soccer League transfer calendar split into two registration periods, clubs have ample opportunity to strengthen their teams. The pre-season window opens on 1 July and usually runs until September, while the mid-season window opens on 1 January and closes in February.
Kaizer Chiefs attacker Khanyisa Mayo, 27, could possibly return to CR Belouizdad, where he arrived from on loan until the end of the season. Amakhosi have an option to buy him when the loan deal expires on 30 June. Mayo delivered two goals in 10 games, including a significant injury layoff and notably less favour from co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.
Orlando Pirates are reportedly working on landing the signatures of Golden Arrows midfielders Isaac Cisse and Siyanda Ndlovu. Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side is keen on strengthening their midfield, and these two players could be valuable additions to their squad.
Durban City are interested in keeping Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego permanently after the left-back impressed during his loan spell at the club. The 29-year-old joined the Citizens on loan and went on to make 29 appearances during the campaign. However, according to Mazola Molefe, Durban City are currently unable to complete a permanent move before the expiry of Mashego’s loan deal in June, with Sundowns expected to bring the Mamelodi-born defender back to Chloorkop.
The Premier Soccer League transfer calendar is designed to give clubs ample opportunity to strengthen their teams. The transfer windows are split into two registration periods: the pre-season window and the mid-season window. This allows clubs to complete squad building before and during the opening weeks of the campaign, as well as strengthen their squads for the second half of the season.
Player salaries and contracts in the PSL are not controlled by a league salary cap or minimum wage structure. Instead, agreements are negotiated directly between the club, player, and player representative. As a result, earnings vary significantly depending on several factors, including player profile and experience. Established stars, senior internationals, and Bafana Bafana players can earn up to R1 million per month, while younger players and footballers at smaller clubs may earn closer to R20,000-30,000 monthly.
Some of the biggest transfers involving South African clubs include Percy Tau’s R64 million move from Mamelodi Sundowns to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018, Mbekezile Mbokazi’s R52 million move from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire FC in 2025, and Thulani Serero’s R50 million move from Ajax Cape Town to AFC Ajax in 2011.
Pre-contract agreements allow clubs to secure players before their current contracts expire. A club negotiates directly with the player, and he signs an agreement confirming that he will join once the existing contract ends. This means no transfer fee is paid. Free transfers, on the other hand, happen when a player becomes available without a transfer fee, usually after their contract expires. Direct negotiations between the new club and the player’s representatives can lead to a mutually beneficial agreement.
