SABC looking to Cancel Muvhango after 20 years

SABC is looking into stopping airing Muvhango.

SABC officially known as The South African Broadcasting Corporation, has been rationalising their operations for the last few years which has led to the reduction in soap operas made available to their viewers. Over the last five years, local shows such as Isidingo and international shows like Days Of Our Lives and the Bold and Beautiful have been stopped after the shows struggled to get the numbers required to reach critical mass.

The SABC cancelled these shows to make way for more unique and local unique shows that may portray better to South African audiences.

The same fate that met Isidingo and Days Of Our Lives could potentially reach the popular show, Muvhango.

The show for the last five years has seen negative growth and viewership, and the time period it was given by SABC to recover has lapsed, triggering thoughts of cancelling right away.

Muvhango remains the number one show on SABC 2, but the financial side of the business means the SABC is always in the negative. Muvhango salaries and production costs are higher than the financial benefits SABC is getting out of its production and distribution.

When is Muvhango going to be cancelled?

SABC management is still considering whether or not to stop airing Muvhango. The date is not immediately available.

It will not be an easy decision to stop its production as it will result in loss of jobs from the production crew to the actors, loss of overall SABC viewership thus the broadcaster could still find ways to manage the Muvhango situation by improving its content and promotional strategies.
