Bafana’s Best XI to Face Mexico at World Cup

Bafana Bafana Kicks Off 2026 FIFA World Cup Campaign Against Mexico

Bafana Bafana will kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against the Mexico national football team at the iconic Estadio Azteca on 11 June. This will mark their return to the World Cup stage, 16 years after their last appearance in 2010 on home soil. Despite having the home-ground advantage, South Africa failed to progress beyond the group stage in 2010.

New Generation of Bafana Players Aims to Make History

This time around, Hugo Broos’ men are determined to rewrite history. They have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Mexico, the Czech Republic, and South Korea. With a win and a draw, Bafana could secure qualification from the group, and even one win might be enough if they finish as one of the best third-place finishers.

Predicted Starting Lineup Against Mexico

Here’s a look at Bafana Bafana’s strongest predicted starting XI against Mexico:

Ronwen Williams (Goalkeeper) – Despite an inconsistent season, Williams remains the best goalkeeper in South Africa, and his leadership and experience in major tournaments will be crucial for Bafana.

Khuliso Mudau (Right-back) – Mudau has developed into one of the best full-backs on the continent and will be tasked with containing Mexico’s dangerous attackers.

Keanu Cupido (Centre-back) – Cupido has only made a handful of appearances for Bafana but could prove to be the ideal defensive partner for Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Centre-back) – Mbokazi has enjoyed a sensational rise and is expected to play a key role at the tournament.

Aubrey Modiba (Left-back) – Modiba offers pace, attacking support, and defensive discipline, and will need to focus on protecting the backline against Mexico’s technically gifted side.

Teboho Mokoena (Central Midfielder) – Mokoena remains one of Bafana’s most important players, and his ability to shield the defence, dictate the tempo, and break up opposition attacks will be vital against Mexico.

Thalente Mbatha (Central Midfielder) – Mbatha’s work rate and physical presence make him a valuable option in midfield, and his height could prove useful when defending set-pieces against Mexico.

Relebohile Mofokeng (Attacking midfielder) – Mofokeng’s pace and creativity could make him a better option than Themba Zwane in a high-tempo encounter.

Oswin Appollis (Right winger) – Appollis has been one of the standout performers in the league and appears certain to start.

Tshepang Moremi (Left winger) – Moremi’s speed and direct approach could cause problems down the flank.

Lyle Foster (FW) – Foster’s experience in the Premier League could prove invaluable at the World Cup, and he may need to produce a moment of brilliance or deliver a decisive finish in front of goal.

Will Bafana Adopt a More Defensive Approach Against Mexico?

Bafana’s approach against Mexico will be crucial in determining their chances of success. A win in their opener would be a significant boost to their campaign.
