Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen is upbeat about his chances of making Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup squad. The 31-year-old goalkeeper has had an impressive season, keeping 15 clean sheets in all competitions. His recent performance in Chiefs’ 1-0 win over AmaZulu FC earned him the Man of the Match award, further solidifying his case.
Petersen, in a post-match interview with SuperSport, expressed his optimism about being part of Hugo Broos’ final squad. However, he acknowledged that the decision is out of his hands. “I think, for me, the hope is always there. But at the end of the day, God is in control. We can only control what we can, and that’s performing week in and week out. That’s the only thing I’m in control of. So, the rest I leave in God’s hands, and let’s see what happens.”
With Ronwen Williams expected to be Bafana Bafana’s first-choice goalkeeper, Petersen is vying for a spot as either the second or third-choice shot-stopper. Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has publicly backed Petersen’s inclusion in the team. Other goalkeepers reportedly in contention include Ricardo Goss of Swallows FC and Sipho Chaine from Orlando Pirates.
The final selection of goalkeepers to accompany Williams to the World Cup remains uncertain. Chiefs will conclude their campaign against Chippa United at Moses Mabhida Stadium next Saturday.
As Petersen continues to perform well, his chances of making the final cut appear promising. With his consistent displays, he has garnered support from fans and former players alike. The decision, however, ultimately rests with coach Hugo Broos.
