The Kaizer Chiefs seem to have found their footing as a team after a commendable 2025/26 season. Although they are set to finish the season without a trophy, they secured a respectable third-place finish in the Betway Premiership. This achievement marks a significant improvement from their previous two campaigns, where they failed to finish in the top eight.
Having struggled to compete for the league in the early stages and in the CAF Confederation Cup in previous seasons, this year’s performance was a welcome change. One of the standout players of the season is undoubtedly goalkeeper Brandon Petersen. The 31-year-old shot-stopper has kept an impressive 13 clean sheets and is in contention for Goalkeeper of the Season.
Another player who has caught the eye is Congolese attacker Glody Lilepo. The 28-year-old has scored nine times across all competitions in 39 matches. In their match against AmaZulu, Lilepo scored his fifth league goal but was sent off for taking his shirt off in celebration.
Coach Cedric Kaze was not entirely displeased with Lilepo’s enthusiastic celebration, which led to his sending off. “Yeah, we need to be careful because he was already booked and he takes his shirt off when he celebrates his goal, which means we’re going to miss him in our last game,” Kaze told SuperSport after the game. “It’s an unfortunate situation, sometimes you understand as well the player’s passion and you know, relief for scoring. But it’s good we have the three points. But in the future, we need to be careful about things like that.”
Despite the improvements, Kaizer Chiefs have struggled with consistency, particularly at the back. The likes of Zitha Kwinika, Given Msimango, Inacio Miguel, and Aden McCarthy have all slotted in at centre-back this season. Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef will have to decide which defensive pairing they will go with next season if they are kept on as co-coaches.
As the season comes to a close, the question on everyone’s mind is: can Kaizer Chiefs win the league next season? With a bit of fine-tuning and consistency, especially in defence, they might just have a chance.
