The Democratic Alliance has made a significant announcement, revealing that Glynnis Breytenbach will be taking on the role of Chief Whip in the National Assembly. This appointment was made public by the DA Parliamentary Leader, George Michalakis, who praised Breytenbach as an experienced parliamentarian with the skills to guide the party’s legislative strategy.
Breytenbach brings a wealth of experience to the position, with 12 years of parliamentary experience and a background as a senior state prosecutor before entering politics. As Chief Whip, she will be responsible for overseeing the DA’s management of parliamentary rules and procedures, and will play a key role in negotiations within Parliament, particularly in the context of the Government of National Unity.
According to Michalakis, Breytenbach will serve as one of the DA’s chief negotiators in Parliament, working closely with him. Her appointment is seen as a strategic move, given her background as the DA’s spokesperson on justice, which reflects the party’s emphasis on crime and public safety.
Michalakis stated that Breytenbach’s appointment sends a clear message that safety and security remain among the DA’s top priorities in Parliament, aligning with the vision of the party’s federal leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis. This move is seen as a significant step in the party’s efforts to address the concerns of South Africans.
In her new role, Breytenbach will work closely with Deputy Chief Whip Bax Nodada, and will help oversee the DA’s parliamentary caucus, which includes 13 National Assembly whips, 87 National Assembly members, and 12 National Council of Provinces members. Michalakis expressed his confidence in the leadership team, stating that Breytenbach and Nodada will form a formidable team in Parliament.
The DA caucus has extended its congratulations and support to Breytenbach as she takes on her new role. For more information on the DA, visit the DA’s website.
