A brand new shopping hub, GandWest Mall, is set to open its doors in Cape Town’s Goodwood suburb later next year. Goodwood is already home to GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, a colourful entertainment precinct in the Mother City.
The area is now poised for further expansion with the development of a R650-million mall, which will cater to the needs of both local residents and visitors. This new mall is expected to complement the existing GrandWest complex, providing a comprehensive entertainment and shopping experience.
The Flanagan & Gerard Group, in partnership with Sun International, is driving the development of GrandWest Mall. The mall will be situated between the N1 and N2, along the M7 motorway leading to the west coast (N7). According to the plans, the mall will be designed by MDS Architecture, while L&S Consulting will handle the structural and civil engineering aspects.
The 22 000m² mall will feature secure open-air parking, with at least one hour of free parking. It will have two access and egress points, as well as three on-grade entrances into the mall directly from the open-air parking area. Construction is scheduled to commence this month (May 2026), with the mall expected to open to the public in June 2027.
More than 70% of the gross lettable area has already been let, with a further 20% currently under offer, as reported by Catchwords. Some of the retail anchor tenants include Checkers FX, Clicks, Dis-Chem, fashion brands from Mr Price Group, Pepkor and the Truworths Group, as well as Superspar (Halaal).
According to Nomzamo Radebe, Sun International Chief Operations Officer: Hospitality & Sales, “including bespoke community retail within the GrandWest precinct is strategically important, as it strengthens our leisure and hospitality offering and supports our long-term vision of GrandWest as a world-class integrated precinct.”
South Africa has seen a surge in shopping mall developments recently. In Pretoria East, the Kings Walk Shopping Centre is set to open in April 2027. In the Eastern Cape, the Boardwalk Mall in Gqeberha is undergoing a R60-million extension.
Construction on GrandWest Mall is due to start soon, and it will be interesting to see how this new development shapes the retail landscape in Cape Town. The mall’s strategic location and diverse tenant lineup are expected to make it a popular destination for shoppers.
