Guardiola Set to Exit Man City

Pep Guardiola has announced that he will be leaving Manchester City at the end of the season. This comes after a decade that saw the team win numerous trophies, transforming English football in the process.

Guardiola’s tenure at City has been nothing short of remarkable, with the team winning 20 trophies under his guidance. These include six Premier League titles and the club’s first-ever Champions League title. Over the past 10 seasons, Guardiola has established himself as one of the most successful managers in the history of the Premier League.

The End of an Era

Aston Villa’s visit to the Etihad on Sunday will mark Guardiola’s final match in charge of Manchester City. Although he will be leaving his role as manager, he is set to continue working with the City Football Group as a global ambassador. In a statement on the club’s website

, Guardiola expressed his gratitude to the team and its fans.

“What a time we have had together,” he said. “Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time. Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.”

News of Guardiola’s departure was first reported on Monday, although he remained tight-lipped about his future at the time. This was despite City missing out on the Premier League title to Arsenal just 24 hours later. Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked on Guardiola’s staff at City, is widely tipped to take over as the team’s new manager.

A Legacy of Success

Guardiola’s trophy haul at City is impressive, to say the least. In addition to the six Premier League titles and one Champions League title, the team has also won three FA Cups, five League Cups, the Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and three Community Shields. Before joining City, Guardiola had already established himself as one of Europe’s most decorated coaches, having won two Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles during his time at Barcelona.

Transforming English Football

Guardiola’s influence on English football cannot be overstated. Backed by the financial resources of Abu Dhabi royalty, Manchester City has become a dominant force in the Premier League, stepping out of the shadow of local rivals Manchester United. The team’s brand of passing football has been adopted by teams at all levels, from grassroots to elite. Even City’s competitors have turned to Guardiola’s disciples to catch up, with Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta being a prime example.

An Investigation Pending

The timing of Guardiola’s exit is noteworthy, given that an investigation into Manchester City’s alleged breaches of financial regulations is still pending. The team was first charged by the Premier League in February 2023, and an independent commission hearing concluded in December 2024. The outcome of this investigation is still to be released, and it will be interesting to see how it affects the team’s achievements on the pitch.
