Mamelodi Sundowns are on the brink of making history, standing 90 minutes away from being crowned CAF Champions League winners, and reaping a substantial financial reward.
The Tshwane giants secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Moroccan outfit AS FAR at Loftus Versfeld in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final last Sunday. This win gives them a narrow yet vital lead heading into the decisive second leg in Morocco.
The eagerly anticipated second leg of the CAF Champions League final between Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR is set to take place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday, 24 May, with kick-off at 21:00 (SA time). The match will be refereed by Omar Abdulkadir Artan from Somali.
Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR are not only competing for the prestigious title of African club kings but also for a record $6 million (R100 million) in prize money. To put that into perspective, this amount is equivalent to five Betway Premiership titles. If Mamelodi Sundowns can end their 10-year wait for a second CAF Champions League title, it will be a highly rewarding experience, especially considering they reportedly won only R20 million when they last lifted the title 10 years ago. The losers, on the other hand, will walk away $4 million (R66 million) richer.
Fate is in Mamelodi Sundowns’ hands as they prepare to face a hostile crowd in Morocco. However, The Brazilians are no strangers to pressure, having recently played in the FIFA World Cup in the USA and last year’s CAF Champions League final. It feels like it’s Masandawana’s time to be crowned the kings of African football, following in the footsteps of Percy Tau and Pitso Mosimane.

The prize money for the winner of this year’s edition is substantial. Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR will battle it out for the top prize, with the winner taking home $6 million.
