It was only a matter of time. And the time has come. MasterKG’s hit song Jerusalema reaches 100 million views on YouTube, a popular online-video sharing platform.
YouTube is the second-most visited site in the world, only behind Google. Google bought the streaming site for $1.65 billion in 2006.
Given the popularity of the song, it comes as no surprise that it has reached such a milestone. The song features Nomcebo Zikode who provides sweet vocals.
MasterKG has won several accolades including Afrima 2018 Award for Best Electro and Dance; Afrimma 2019 Award for Best Male Southern Africa; SABC Summer Song 2018 for Skeleton Move; and the Limpopo Music Award for Best House Single for Skeleton Move.
The hit song made it onto the international scene a long time but got an even bigger appreciation when people in overseas countries danced to it.
In late July, Minister of Arts, Sports and Culture Nathi Mthethwa appointed MasterKG and Nomcebo Zikode to serve as ambassadors to the international community as the song fosters social cohesion.
“It’s an honour for us. We want to thank you for taking this moment to appreciate and recognise us,” said MasterKG as he accepted the nomination via Zoom.
MasterKG and Nomcebo are being celebrated for becoming the first local artists to reach 100 million views on YouTube in less than 12 months.
Many people noted that although MasterKG didn’t win the SAMAs (South Africa Music Awards), he “is still doing the most.”
Jerusalema reached 50 million views in late July and needed a little more than a month to reach the 100-million-views-milestone.
MasterKG was active on Twitter as he counted down to 100 million views.
The is no doubt that the pair has made the country proud. The number of views will keep on rising. One thing for sure is that MasterKG and Nomcebo have put South Africa on the world map.
