Northern Cape’s Small Karoo Town Up for Sale

Buying a Whole Town in South Africa? It’s a Reality in the Northern Cape

For many South Africans, buying a house is a lifelong dream. But what about buying an entire town? That sounds like something out of a wacky sitcom. Not anymore, though. A town in the Northern Cape has been put up for sale, and it’s a unique opportunity.

Middelpos: A Karoo Town with a Rich History

The town of Middelpos, described as “one of the few remaining authentic Karoo villages in South Africa,” is up for grabs. Spanning 103 hectares, Middelpos is situated halfway between Sutherland and Calvinia on the R354 in the Upper Karoo. Its proximity to Tankwa Karoo National Park makes it an ideal stopover for visitors and tourists.

What’s Included in the Sale?

The successful buyer will own the town’s infrastructure, including the Middelpos Hotel, General Dealer, factory building, three dwellings, hall, old post office, borehole, and irrigable land measuring 4.75 hectares. These structures are ripe for renovation and offer potential for new development across various sectors.

A Piece of South African History

Middelpos began life as a trading outpost in 1860, serving the needs of surrounding farms. The town is also the setting of Middlepost, a 1989 novel written by SA-born British actor Sir Antony Sher. Buying Middelpos offers the chance to own a piece of South African history, unaffected by modernisation.

Sale Details

The town will be sold via a timed auction. Bidding opens on 21 May 2026 at 12:00 and closes on 22 May 2026 at 12:00. Viewings are currently by appointment only.
