Orlando Pirates’ Persistent Struggle Against Deep-Lying Defences

It appears that Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and his team have not learned from their struggles this season. The Buccaneers have consistently struggled to score against teams that employ a disciplined, defensive approach, often sitting deep and absorbing pressure.

Whenever Pirates face such opponents, they seem to be exposed. Teams willing to frustrate them have repeatedly highlighted the same weakness in Ouaddou’s side. Earlier this season, the Soweto giants struggled to break down Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants in cup finals, requiring extra time to secure victories in both matches. If either game had gone to penalties, Pirates could have easily been eliminated.

Ouaddou’s Tactical Conundrum

The problem resurfaced against Casric Stars, a Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit that defended resolutely and eventually knocked Pirates out of the Nedbank Cup via a penalty shootout. A goalless draw against Durban City on Saturday was another example of the same issue. Needing a win to move closer to the Betway Premiership title, Pirates failed to find a way past a stubborn defence.

This raises serious questions about whether Ouaddou has addressed one of his team’s biggest tactical shortcomings. When opponents employ a low block, Pirates seem to run out of ideas in the final third. This weakness could yet cost them the league title if Orbit College adopt similar tactics in the decisive final match.

Pirates’ Title Hopes Still Alive

Despite their struggles, Pirates have looked entertaining and free-scoring at times this season. However, under pressure, creativity and composure have often deserted them when it mattered most. With two trophies already in Ouaddou’s cabinet, the question remains: can Pirates still win the league?
