The Backstreet Boys’ former manager, Lou Pearlman, was not what he seemed. Unbeknown to the band, Pearlman was creating their rivals, NSYNC, using the same model as that of the Backstreet Boys. He even designated himself as the sixth member of each group, which was one of his clever ways to defraud money from both groups. The band sued Pearlman, and NSYNC also took legal action against him.
Pearlman was eventually convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2008. He died in 2016. Despite the controversy, the band regrouped and continued to climb up the industry ladder.
