FIFA World Cup 2026 is just around the corner, bringing with it a mix of hope and disappointment for Kaizer Chiefs players who are eager to represent South Africa on the biggest stage in football.
Recently, Hugo Broos announced his 23-man squad for the back-to-back friendlies against Panama, and unfortunately, no Kaizer Chiefs players were included.
However, there is still a glimmer of hope for Kaizer Chiefs fans, as one of their star players has been making a strong case for selection in Bafana Bafana‘s squad for the tournament.
Amakhosi’s World Cup Hopes Rest on One Player
Brandon Petersen has been in outstanding form lately, prompting many to call for his inclusion in Bafana Bafana‘s final squad for the FIFA World Cup. His recent performances have been impressive, particularly in the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, where he was named man of the match after helping Kaizer Chiefs secure a 1-1 draw.
Petersen’s display was all the more remarkable given that Orlando Pirates had entered the match as favourites, having beaten Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 just weeks earlier. Despite the odds, Petersen produced several crucial saves under immense pressure in front of a crowd of over 90,000 supporters at the FNB Stadium.
A Turning Point in the Season
Petersen’s form continued in Kaizer Chiefs‘ match against Mamelodi Sundowns, where he produced an even more impressive performance. His dramatic 96th-minute save could yet prove to be a decisive moment in the title race, as it helped Kaizer Chiefs secure a crucial 1-1 draw against the Brazilians at Loftus Versfeld.
Although this result has shifted the title momentum in favour of Orlando Pirates, Petersen‘s recent form is a positive sign for Kaizer Chiefs fans. With Petersen in such good form, he represents Kaizer Chiefs‘ strongest chance of having a player included in South Africa‘s FIFA World Cup squad.
Competition for Places
However, Petersen faces stiff competition from Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who has enjoyed an exceptional season. Chaine has kept 20 clean sheets in 29 Betway Premiership matches, strengthening his claim for national selection. As a result, Chaine is widely expected to join Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams and Ricardo Goss on the plane to the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Broos’ Selection Dilemma
Based on Broos‘ recent selections and the current form of several Kaizer Chiefs players, the club appears unlikely to have additional representatives in Bafana Bafana‘s final FIFA World Cup squad. However, Petersen‘s recent form has given Kaizer Chiefs fans reason to be hopeful that at least one of their players will be included in the squad.
