There’s a tidy version of this story going around: Emtee breached his bail conditions, a magistrate sent him back to jail, and days later his parents surfaced in a viral video taking his belongings from his girlfriend’s car. All true, and all beside the point. The image I can’t shake is a 33-year-old with no manager and no formal hold on his own affairs, locked in a cell while the adults around him physically fought over his phone, bank card and car keys on the side of a road.
The arrest landed on Monday, August 17 at the Midrand Magistrate’s Court, where his bail was revoked over WhatsApp messages he allegedly sent to his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy. A source close to the case tells me the messages called her an offensive name. What should bother you is how easily the law keeps feeding him back to a cell.
A bail condition built to be broken
When he handed himself in at Midrand police station in June and walked out on R1,000 bail, the conditions barred him from posting about Chinsamy “directly or indirectly, whether good or bad.” Sit with that. Not threats, not harassment, any mention at all, kind or cruel. For a private citizen that’s strict. For a man whose personal life is permanent tabloid currency, it’s a tripwire strung across his entire public existence.
Which raises a question nobody has asked out loud. His formal apology to Chinsamy, his children and his fans went up on Instagram on August 6, and it addressed her by name. If the clause covers indirect mentions, did the apology itself graze the very condition meant to protect her? Nobody knows, because the court isn’t explaining itself and neither party is talking.
Ten days after that apology came the alleged offensive texts, and the cynicism online was instant and earned. People remember June, when he posted a fresh haircut and a “new journey” rebrand and got arrested the same week. Contrition as content, breach as inevitability. His erratic August 4 Instagram Live with girlfriend Nandi Ndathane, where he told about 315 viewers “they don’t want me to have a car, or a house, or to be loved,” drew the caption “Emtee is embarrassing yoh. This lady is strong shame!” when it crossed my timeline. Half the replies worried about him. The rest laughed.
And underneath it all sits an asymmetry the coverage keeps dodging. Both Emtee and Chinsamy have posted allegations against each other over the years, bruises and broken doors included. Yet the protection order, the bail conditions and the cells run one way only. I won’t pretend to know what happened in that marriage. I am saying the public keeps snagging on the imbalance, and rightly so.
Saturday’s roadside video was asset recovery, not gossip
On August 23, two older people widely taken to be his parents, Phathiswa and Lumkile Ndevu, confronted the occupants of a VW minibus, the woman inside identified by commenters as Nandi. They walked off with his phone, bank card, jewellery, clothes and car keys. Nothing in the clip is confirmed by anyone involved, and neither Emtee nor Nandi has spoken since. His X account, usually his loudest megaphone, has gone quiet. Her last post, on August 19, showed them shooting a video for their joint song “Buya.” Two days after he was jailed.
Scroll the comments and you won’t find much moralising. The top reactions were “Just give his items back!” and “Hawu! Did they break up?” Local audiences have stopped treating this as a romance scandal and started treating it as logistics, and they’re right. When an artist has a functioning team, a manager holds the devices, guards the cards and fronts the press. Emtee has had none of that since he cut loose from management, and his family plugging the gap isn’t new. Nota Baloyi admitted back in 2022 that he phoned Emtee’s parents to stage an intervention. Four years on, they’re still the emergency service of last resort, except now they work in person and on camera.
Nandi’s position deserves scrutiny from every angle. She is his girlfriend, his collaborator on “Buya,” and the person holding his phone and bank card while he sits in Johannesburg Correctional Services, the facility everyone calls Sun City, in a relationship his own manager Hlubi Radebe helped introduce. It’s the same blur of romance and revenue running through local music, where a feature lifts a catalogue the way Ami Faku‘s “Imali” went gold, or a nomination run keeps AKA in global rooms. Claims are also circulating from a single unnamed family source that she used his phone to message Maphorisa for money. None of that is verified, she has had no chance to respond, and the obvious question hangs in the air: why is the family briefing entertainment pages while the one man who could answer for himself sits in a cell?
From here, watch three things. Whether someone finally wraps formal stewardship around him, an attorney with power of attorney, a trusted hand on his devices and accounts, before the next crisis. Whether Nandi ever speaks, because her silence is being scripted by other people right now. And whether the divorce is actually final, since depending on who you ask it either is, isn’t, or is in progress.
My honest read after a week of this: stop waiting for the redemption arc or the villain reveal. I’ve sat through enough of these cycles to know the difference between a scandal and a systems failure, and this is plainly the second one. Until somebody builds real structure around Mthembeni Ndevu, every crisis ends the same way, with the people closest to him fighting over hardware on a roadside while he watches from behind glass.
