Freshlyground Returns with New Music and a Fresh Sound
The highly anticipated comeback of Freshlyground is finally here, and their new single, Take Me Home, is already generating excitement among fans who have been eagerly awaiting their return. With a career spanning over two decades, the Afro-fusion band has built a loyal following and has previously released six studio albums, including Jika Jika (2003), Nomvula (2004), Ma’cheri (2007), Radio Africa (2010), Take Me to the Dance (2012), and Can’t Stop (2018).
After taking a break in 2019, during which time lead vocalist Zolani Mahola left the group to pursue a solo career, Freshlyground is back with a new album and a fresh sound. The band is now vocally led by 20-year-old Mbali Makhoba, who brings a new energy to the group. According to Freshlyground, “Makhoba’s story embodies the spirit of modern South Africa. Growing up in Cape Town’s Imizamo Yethu township, she has overcome significant challenges to pursue her passion for music.” The band’s website further notes that “Her deep connection to South African musical traditions and contemporary artistry perfectly aligns with Freshlyground’s vision. Her addition not only represents a musical evolution but also continues our commitment to sharing South Africa’s vibrant culture with audiences worldwide.”
The new album features eight tracks, including Jabula, Welele, and the lead single Take Me Home, which showcases the band’s bluesy side. Other songs on the album include Escape Reality, Rocks My Bones, Tshintsho, Make It, and Walk On By. The band’s music is a unique blend of African rhythms, jazz, and international sounds, making them a standout in the music industry.
