Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng has shared his thoughts on the team’s recent failure to secure a win against Durban City. The Buccaneers were held to a goalless draw at the Orlando Stadium, a result that has put their Betway Premiership title hopes in jeopardy.
Pirates needed a victory to secure the title, but the Sea Robbers were unable to break down their opponents’ defence. Mofokeng admitted that Durban City made life difficult for Pirates, with the visitors determined to defend deep and frustrate the hosts. “It was very difficult from the very beginning until the end,” Mofokeng said in a post-match interview. “They came to defend and they did it very well. I think they were preparing for that the whole week.”
Pirates still have a chance to win the league if they beat Orbit College on Saturday. Mofokeng’s team will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing result, and the winger will be hoping to add to his tally of 10 goals in the league. In the meantime, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has come to the defence of his players, who he felt were heavily targeted physically during the clash with Durban City.
Ouaddou expressed his concerns about the physical treatment of his players, saying “there is a difference between playing with strength and physicality on the ball and trying to break players.” He added that he will always prioritise protecting his players, especially with young fans watching from the stands. “We must not forget that there are children in the stands. We have to be an example. Football has to be a bridge, an example and a model for the next generation,” Ouaddou said.
Despite the setback, Pirates still have a chance to win the league. Mofokeng and his team will be looking to make the most of their opportunity and secure the title. With a win against Orbit College, Pirates can still achieve their goal and make their fans proud.
