Orlando Pirates are making swift moves in the transfer market ahead of the new season. The Buccaneers are reportedly close to signing Polokwane City’s highly rated defender, Thabang Matuludi.

The team is expected to bolster several areas of their squad during the upcoming transfer window, particularly with the demanding Betway Premiership and CAF campaign on the horizon. One position that has garnered significant attention is right-back.

Orlando Pirates’ Transfer Plans

According to Kick Off journalist Ernst Fakude, negotiations between Pirates and Polokwane City are at an advanced stage. A source revealed to Kick Off that “negotiations are now at an advanced stage. Matuludi is expected to be a Pirates player next season.”

Thabang Matuludi’s Rise to Prominence

Born in Limpopo on January 14, 1999, Matuludi has become one of the standout defenders in the Betway Premiership. His unique combination of physical strength, pace, and aerial dominance makes him a formidable player on the right flank.

At 1.89 metres tall, Matuludi offers a different profile to the traditional South African fullback. He is aggressive in duels, powerful in the air, and comfortable driving forward during attacking phases.

Matuludi’s journey to the top level was not straightforward. He emerged from lower-tier football and helped Polokwane City earn promotion back to the PSL. Once the team returned to the top flight, he became one of the club’s most important players.

A serious knee injury did not hinder his progress. Instead, the defender returned stronger and continued producing energetic performances on both ends of the pitch.

Matuludi’s National Team Call-Up

Matuludi’s impressive form eventually caught the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. The Polokwane City star has since featured in national team squads for important AFCON and 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures.

His coach, Phuti Mohafe, has described Matuludi as the second-best right-back in the country, behind Mamelodi Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau.
