Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has shared an interesting revelation about his career, stating that Orlando Pirates had expressed interest in him before he joined Masandawana. This news comes as a surprise, given Zwane’s long and successful tenure with Sundowns, which spans over 15 years and includes an impressive 450 appearances and 80 goals.
Zwane’s journey to Sundowns began in 2011, and he has since become an integral part of the team, winning a total of 18 trophies. In a recent interview on PitchSide
, Zwane reminisced about how he joined Sundowns, recalling a national U23 camp where he received a call from his boss, Sinky Mnisi, informing him of Sundowns’ interest.According to Zwane, he was eager to sign with Sundowns and didn’t hesitate when given the opportunity. “I remember that week after playing Philly’s Games, maybe two weeks later, they called a national U23 camp, I went for the squad and when I was there I got a call from my Vardos boss, Sinky Mnisi, he was like ey, Sundowns are really interested, they are serious,” he said. Zwane added that he was so excited about the prospect of joining Sundowns that he didn’t even bother to look at the contract details before signing.
It’s interesting to consider how Zwane’s career might have unfolded if he had chosen to join Pirates instead of Sundowns. With Pirates, he would have faced stiff competition from established players like Oupa Manyisa and Andile Jali during their treble-winning days. However, given Zwane’s talent and dedication, it’s possible that he could have still made a significant impact at Pirates.
Despite the what-ifs, Zwane has expressed his gratitude for the decision to join Sundowns, which has worked out remarkably well for him. With his impressive record and numerous accolades, Zwane is widely regarded as one of the greatest PSL players of all time. His story serves as a reminder that sometimes, the choices we make can have a profound impact on our lives and careers, and it’s fascinating to consider how things might have turned out if Zwane had taken a different path.
