Chiefs stunned by Chippa’s survival act

Kaizer Chiefs visited the Moses Mabhida Stadium with only pride at stake, but they left with a 1-0 defeat after Chippa United caught them off guard in the final round of the Betway Premiership.

A rotated Amakhosi lineup had trouble finding their rhythm, and their slow start was punished by a determined Chippa United side. Chippa, who were fighting to stay in the top flight, came into this match with a lot of energy and a sense of urgency in every action they took.

Chippa United’s Determined Performance

Their urgency paid off in the 32nd minute when Sammy Seabi scored at the back post after a well-timed move carved open the Chiefs defence. This goal put pressure on the hosts, and Chippa United took advantage of it.

The Amakhosi technical approach relied heavily on young and fringe players, with several Diski Challenge graduates getting a chance to play on the big stage. Although they had energy, they lacked the final product.

Early on, Chiefs nearly scored through Naledi Hlongwane, but a heavy touch cost them a great opportunity in the first five minutes. At the other end, debutant goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba showed promise, making a sharp close-range save to deny Chippa a second goal before the break.

Chippa United Secures Top-Flight Status

In the second half, Chiefs tried to take control with more possession and attacking intent, introducing experienced players to steady the attack. The pressure was on, with Lebohang Maboe going close twice, including a powerful header that drifted just wide and a long-range effort that was bravely blocked.

However, Chippa United stayed compact, disciplined, and stubborn. Every final ball from Chiefs seemed to meet a Chippa player, while goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi remained alert to collect anything that got through.

In the end, Chippa held firm through added time, sealing a massive away win that confirmed their survival in the top flight. For Chiefs, it was a reminder that control without a cutting edge rarely wins matches.
