Durban City Coach Explains Pirates’ Goalless Draw
Durban City head coach Pitso Dladla has shed light on why Orlando Pirates failed to score against his team on Saturday. The Buccaneers were held to a goalless draw by City at the Orlando Stadium. A win would have secured them the Betway Premiership title with a game to spare.
Dladla expressed pride in his team’s performance, saying, “Credit to the boys. We knew that it would be difficult. Our resolute defence did it. We defended as a team.” He added that his team’s strong defensive strategy, particularly against set-pieces, made it difficult for Pirates to score.
Pirates’ Title Hopes Hang in the Balance
Dladla also praised Pirates for their technical skill and mobility, saying, “Pirates, to be honest, have players who are technically gifted and also very mobile. They can put together a combination play. If combination play does not materialise, they can produce individual brilliance.” However, he noted that his team worked hard to close down Pirates’ attacking options.
The draw has set back Pirates’ title hopes, and they now need to beat Orbit College in their final league match to be crowned champions. If they fail to win, Mamelodi Sundowns will win their ninth consecutive league title, as they have already played all their league games and lead Pirates by two points.
Can Pirates Clinch the Title This Weekend?
Speaking after the Pirates game on X, Dladla’s comments highlight his team’s confidence in their defensive strategy. With Pirates’ title hopes hanging in the balance, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to the league season.
