Erasmus Faces Scrumhalf Crisis After Van den Berg's Surgery

The Springboks and Lions have been dealt a significant blow with scrumhalf Morné van den Berg set to undergo surgery on his bicep and face up to six months on the sidelines.

Van den Berg had the operation on Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the United Rugby Championship (URC) playoffs, as well as a substantial part of South Africa’s Test season. This is a major setback for both teams, particularly the Lions, who are preparing for their historic first URC quarter-final against Leinster in Dublin next Saturday.

Injury Blow for Lions and Springboks

Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen confirmed the extent of the injury, stating that van den Berg will likely be out for four to six months. “Unfortunately, it looks like he will be out four to six months. So, it’s a big blow,” Van Rooyen said. Van den Berg is the latest casualty in a growing injury list for the Johannesburg side, which also includes utility forward Ruan Venter, who underwent knee surgery this week.

Van Rooyen added that both van den Berg and Venter were operated on on Wednesday and that the operations went well, but unfortunately, both players will be out for a significant period. “Obviously, it’s a couple of our senior guys, our momentum guys, in our system,” he said.

Tough Timing for Springboks

The timing of van den Berg’s injury is particularly concerning for the Springboks, with coach Rassie Erasmus preparing for a packed international calendar, including the new Nations Championship and the highly anticipated Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand. The Springbok management already has concerns over Sharks scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse, who has battled multiple concussions this season and is being carefully managed.

With Faf de Klerk having returned to South Africa and now playing for the Cheetahs, and Grant Williams having moved to Japan, van den Berg’s absence now leaves South Africa thinner in a key position as preparations intensify for one of the biggest Test seasons in recent years.
