The City of Johannesburg is ramping up free workshops for spaza shop owners and informal traders across the metro, urging them to get their paperwork in order. The sessions, led by the City’s Economic Development Department, aim to help businesses become compliant, access support programmes, and unlock growth opportunities.
These workshops are taking place ahead of the planned Spaza Shop and Informal Traders Expo Summit in September. Officials say the programme is designed to help businesses navigate the complexities of formalisation and access vital resources.
Recent sessions in Cosmo City and Meadowlands drew a strong turnout from business owners seeking clarity on permits, compliance, and support measures. According to Benji Seitlhamo, Acting Director for Economic Development Facilitation, many traders are keen to formalise their businesses.
“We are encouraged by the turnout and the quality of engagement,” he said. “Business owners are asking relevant questions and showing a clear commitment to becoming compliant.”
The workshops will continue at the Braamfischerville Multipurpose Centre in Region C2 on Thursday, followed by a session at the Doornkop Community Hall on Friday.
To operate legally, informal traders must secure permission for trading spaces. Those selling food must obtain health approvals and register with the Department of Economic Development. Spaza shop owners, meanwhile, must meet planning, fire, and environmental health standards before permits can be issued.
Traders have raised concerns about challenges related to documentation, illegal business structures, and operating in undesignated areas. Seitlhamo noted that collaboration with departments such as Home Affairs will be crucial in resolving some of these concerns.
Business stakeholders supporting the programme believe that the workshops can also help township businesses access funding and innovation opportunities. The City has encouraged traders to attend the remaining sessions and use them to strengthen their businesses ahead of the upcoming Spaza Shop and Informal Traders Expo Summit scheduled for 17 and 18 September.
