Nokuthula’s stress-free UKZN graduation day

Nokuthula Dlamini, a recent graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, has inspired many with her heartwarming graduation story. She chose not to stress about buying a new dress for the occasion, a decision that has resonated with many.

On May 6, Nokuthula obtained her Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Sociology from the renowned university. The moment was particularly special as she shared a warm hug with her mother, Lindiwe Dlamini. As a Pietermaritzburg native and only child, Nokuthula’s academic journey was not without its challenges, complicated by financial issues. However, she received support from her lecturer, roommate, and supervisor, which helped her stay on track.

Overcoming Adversity to Achieve Success

In an interview, Nokuthula shared that due to her disadvantaged background, she decided not to trouble her mother for a new dress for her graduation. Her mother makes ends meet through informal trading. Nokuthula explained, “I did not want to trouble my mother because I knew the dire situation at home, so I decided to go with the clothes I had.” She added, “What was important for me was just to be present at graduation because I thought this might be the last one for me.”

The 24-year-old wore a plain black dress and styled her natural hair in simple piggy tails, a choice that raised concerns among many on social media. However, this also led to an outpouring of love and support, with hair stylists, chefs, fashion designers, photographers, and the general public offering to organise a special graduation celebration for her.

A Heartfelt Response to Support

Nokuthula expressed her gratitude for the support she received, saying, “I am so grateful to everyone who has reached out. I wish I could shout to the world to thank each and every one of them.” She added, “I feel God has answered all my prayers and worries. Thank you to everyone.” Nokuthula’s message to students facing similar challenges is one of perseverance, encouraging them to dedicate themselves to their studies and see them through to the end. As she put it, “Don’t give up, go out and finish what you started.”
