Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula is considering hanging up his boots at the end of the current season. The 36-year-old has been an integral part of the team, having joined the Sea Robbers in 2023 and already collecting five trophies during his time at the Soweto giants.
As the season draws to a close, Makhaula is on the verge of winning his first-ever league title. Earlier this year, Makhaula hinted that he could retire if Orlando Pirates go on to win the league title this season. This suggestion has sparked interest, given his experience and the team’s current performance.
Following an injury to Sihle Ndluli late last year, Makhaula found himself with increased game time and became a regular under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. He has risen to the challenge, and his dedication has been evident in his gameplay. Makhaula noted that the young players in the team always push him to perform at his best, saying, “I think the young guys always want to challenge me each and every time, even during training. When I try to take things easy, they always come hard at me.”
Orlando Pirates Midfielder Weighs Retirement Options
With his 37th birthday approaching, Makhaula admits that lifting the league trophy could be the perfect way to end his career. He expressed his desire to win the league, saying, “Only God knows. I’m always praying because my wish is the league. We will see, maybe this season it can happen.” Makhaula also stated that winning the league would be a dream come true, adding, “It would be a dream come true. When you go to other teams, they don’t even try to fight for the league, but with big teams you must always compete for trophies. Big teams are always fighting for something.”
Pirates now need just a win from their remaining league fixtures to be crowned champions. If the team succeeds, Makhaula could announce his retirement soon. The Buccaneers are close to achieving their goal, and Makhaula’s potential retirement is a topic of interest.
What’s Next for Makhaula?
Makhaula’s decision to retire will depend on the outcome of the season. If the team wins the league, he may consider hanging up his boots. For now, fans will have to wait and see what the future holds for this experienced midfielder.
