As the current season draws to a close, Orlando Pirates are likely to bid farewell to several experienced players. The team has already parted ways with Olisa Ndah, and it seems that Tapelo Xoki may be the next to leave. The former AmaZulu captain has been sidelined with an injury all season, and with his contract expiring, a contract extension appears unlikely.
Another player who may be on his way out is right-back Bandile Shandu. Shandu has found himself out of favor, with Deano van Rooyen, Kamogelo Sebelebele, and Thabiso Lebitso taking precedence in the right-back position. This lack of playing time has led to speculation about his future at the club.
Shandu’s agent, Mike Makaab, has also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that his client may seek new opportunities. “Bandile Shandu, as you know, his contract is coming to an end at the end of the season, and he hasn’t been playing,” Makaab told FARPost. “So, I can tell you that Shandu is unlikely to stay with Pirates when his contract comes to an end, and we are looking for other opportunities.”
Despite the potential changes to their squad, Orlando Pirates have secured a spot in the CAF Champions League for next season. This follows their rivals Kaizer Chiefs’ midweek loss to Siwelele. Although the team’s continental campaign this season was cut short, they are looking to bounce back and make a stronger impression in the competition next year.
The Buccaneers had high hopes for this season’s CAF Champions League but suffered a disappointing exit in the preliminary round, losing to DR Congo outfit Saint Éloi Lupopo in a penalty shootout. However, the team has enjoyed a largely positive season under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, with two domestic trophies already secured and a potential treble still within reach.
Orlando Pirates have earned close to R20 million from their trophy successes so far, but the CAF Champions League prize, reportedly around R100 million, remains a significant target. Securing this prize could greatly boost the club’s finances. With their qualification for the CAF Champions League confirmed, the team will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity and make a strong impression in the competition next year.
