Cricket South Africa Faces Backlash Over New Year’s Test Ticket Sales

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has come under fire from local fans after announcing that the highly anticipated New Year’s Test between the Proteas and England at Newlands was sold out. The decision has sparked widespread frustration among domestic cricket enthusiasts, with many accusing the organisation of prioritising England fans in a money-making scheme.

The official public ticket launch was advertised for 09:30 on Monday, but local fans who logged into the ticketing platform minutes early discovered that the opening four days of the iconic early-January match were already completely sold out. Day five tickets were not on sale yet, as Tests rarely go the distance.

CSA has since released a statement, confirming that the match is currently sold out, with additional general access tickets scheduled to be released at a later stage. According to the organisation, a limited number of general access tickets were released for sale on their official ticketing website, and all available tickets were purchased significantly quicker than anticipated.

The organisation revealed that, as part of their strategic focus on sustaining and growing South African cricket, 12% of all general access tickets were allocated to international travel packages, while 27% were allocated to domestic travel packages. This aligns with CSA’s broader strategy to stimulate South African sports tourism both internationally and domestically through cricket.

Concerns Over Ticket Distribution and Commercial Strategy

However, CSA has yet to fully address growing local concerns regarding transparent ticket distribution and the commercial balancing act between capturing foreign currency and maintaining local fan loyalty.

CSA also announced that General Hospitality packages will be made available through Newlands Stadium, affording cricket fans the opportunity to enjoy general ticket access combined with a premium hospitality experience.

The organisation thanked fans for their support ahead of what promises to be an unforgettable atmosphere at Newlands in January 2027. The increase in demand for tickets bears testament to the sharp spike in interest for Test cricket post the Proteas Men crowning as ICC World Test Champions for 2025.
