The South African Football Association (SAFA) Chief Medical Officer, Dr Thulani Ngwenya, is set to play a crucial role at the FIFA World Cup this year. He has been appointed as a Doping Control Officer, a position that comes with great responsibility. Dr Ngwenya will be based in Dallas, United States of America, from 7 June to 15 July, and will be working under the FIFA Anti-Doping Unit (FADU) to oversee In and Out-of-Competition Anti-Doping Controls.
Dr Ngwenya is widely regarded as one of the world’s top officials in the field of sports medicine. He has lent his expertise to numerous high-profile tournaments, including FIFA, the Olympics, CAF, COSAFA, and many others. His appointment to the FIFA World Cup is a testament to his exceptional skills and experience.
Dr Ngwenya expressed his gratitude and pride at being selected for this prestigious role. “It is indeed a huge honour and a privilege to represent South Africa and the continent at large at the FIFA World Cup in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico,” he said. “I take so much pride knowing that I’m representing the continent in the medical division in the World Cup.”
He also acknowledged the support he has received from the South African Football Association leadership, particularly SAFA president Danny Jordaan. “I got here in the association when I was still very young, in the year 2014, and the Federation and the leadership have always supported me,” he said. “I grew in stature through COSAFA, CAF, and now FIFA. Things couldn’t have been what they are now without the support from the leadership, and without the eye of the leadership seeing great potential in me.”
Dr Ngwenya has had a distinguished career, with numerous highlights and achievements. He has represented South Africa at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He was also appointed as the Doping Control Officer for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, and for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina in 2023. Additionally, he has served in the same position during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon in 2022, the 2024 continental tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, and the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. He is also the Vice President of the CAF Medical Commission.
Dr Ngwenya’s achievements are a source of pride for South Africa, and his appointment to the FIFA World Cup is a significant milestone. He is the first African to be appointed as a Doping Control Officer to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup. This achievement is a testament to his hard work and dedication to his craft.
