Stripe isn’t buying a model maker or a research lab. It’s buying the metering layer between eight million developers and the large language models they use every day. This is about turning token consumption into a billable event, and owning the rail that makes it possible.

The numbers are staggering. OpenRouter last raised at a $1.3 billion valuation in May. Four months later, the price has multiplied more than fivefold. That kind of jump doesn’t happen because investors fell in love with a routing algorithm. It happens when someone realizes the algorithm is sitting on top of a payment stream.
