But after digging into the specs, the local coverage, and the quiet skepticism in community threads, I’m convinced this thing is a solution still searching for the right South African problem.
The Oxiis is essentially a universal retrofit. No wheel swaps, no frame drilling. It hangs off your seatpost, senses your cadence and the incline, and feeds power through a roller pressing against the tire. ASUS claims up to 50 km range in Eco mode, though real-world Sport mode usage drops that to roughly 10 km. It’s IPX4 rated, which means it’ll survive a Sea Point drizzle but not a Durban downpour. In markets where cyclists ride predictable asphalt and store bikes in secure offices, that formula works. South Africa isn’t one of those markets.

The Compatibility List Reads Like a Warning Label
ASUS has published a compatibility list that reads like a warning label. No full-suspension bikes. No carbon fiber seatposts. Tires must be slick, semi-slick, or textured, but not knobby, and no wider than 60 mm. Wheel sizes from 16 to 29 inches are supported, yet many of the entry-level commuters sold at South African retailers come with budget knobby hybrids that would chew through this roller in weeks.
