Aden McCarthy, the son of Kaizer Chiefs legend Fabian McCarthy, is a strong contender for the club’s Player of the Season award. The 22-year-old left-central defender has been consistent in his performance, playing in 31 games, starting from pre-season in the Netherlands.
McCarthy’s Rise to Prominence
McCarthy’s journey to the senior team has been a gradual one. He explained that stepping into senior football felt like a natural progression, building on the work he had done in previous years. “Before this season started, I was able to make my debut for the senior team, it’s definitely one to remember,” he said. McCarthy had already won the DDC and had been training and playing games with the reserve team for the past two to three seasons.
Prior to the season, McCarthy had been in talks with the first-team set-up, which made his transition to the senior team less daunting. Kaizer Chiefs, sensing interest from overseas, moved quickly to secure his future, and McCarthy signed a new contract until 2029.
The Mental Aspect of Success
McCarthy credits his mental preparation for his progress on the field. “I feel like what I did off the field helped me stay grounded,” he said. McCarthy has been boxing for almost a year and has also worked with a mental coach, which he believes has made him mentally strong. He worked with performance psychologist Mr Henning before the season began, preparing him for the future and teaching him how to manage situations that were out of his control.
McCarthy is expected to start again when Kaizer Chiefs face Chippa United this Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, with kick-off at 15:00. The full list of Betway Premiership fixtures includes:
