On Friday, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will stage a picket outside the Constitutional Court in anticipation of a judgement in the Phala Phala matter, which involves President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The party is seeking to overturn Parliament’s decision to block an impeachment inquiry into Ramaphosa, following the theft of over $500 000 from his Phala Phala Farm in February 2020.
EFF spokesperson Thembi Msane stated that the party remains committed to ensuring accountability for the handling of foreign currency allegedly kept at the farm.
Msane noted that the EFF has been the lone voice demanding accountability for the criminality and abuse of power surrounding the Phala Phala scandal.
The party hopes that the Constitutional Court will order the Section 89 panel report to be returned to Parliament for lawful consideration and accountability processes.
Challenging Parliament’s Decision
The case follows a challenge brought by the EFF and the African Transformation Movement after the National Assembly voted against proceeding with an impeachment inquiry in December 2022.
The African National Congress used its parliamentary majority to reject findings by an independent panel, which concluded that Ramaphosa may have violated sections of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act.
Judgement in the matter will be delivered on Friday, 8 May, at around 10:00.
