DA Leader Geordin Hill-Lewis Sets Sights On KwaZulu-Natal
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is determined to become the governing alternative in KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the 2026 local government elections, according to party leader Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Hill-Lewis delivered a speech during the party’s Provincial Congress on Saturday, where he outlined the DA’s plans for the province.
A New Era For KwaZulu-Natal
Hill-Lewis began by acknowledging the beauty and resilience of KwaZulu-Natal, but also recognized the challenges it faces, including infrastructure failures, crime, and corruption.
He emphasized that the DA’s task in the province is not just to be a strong opposition party, but to become a governing alternative that can work with others while remaining principled and disciplined.
The DA must be a party that can deliver services reliably, spend public money honestly, and put residents before politicians, Hill-Lewis said.
Achieving Success In KwaZulu-Natal
Hill-Lewis pointed to the success of the DA in uMngeni, where the party has shown that it can govern effectively and deliver services to the community.
He called on the party to be ambitious and to fight for Durban, which he believes should be one of the great cities of Africa, with clean beaches, reliable services, and safe communities.
Hill-Lewis also emphasized the importance of connecting with South Africans who have never voted for the DA before, and of being present in communities consistently, not just during campaigns.
Restoring Faith In Government
The DA must show strength and principle in government, Hill-Lewis said, and must not tolerate a broken police system.
He called for capable governments to be given investigative powers, and for crime intelligence to be used to lead to arrests and prosecutions.
Hill-Lewis also emphasized the need to get corrupt cops out of the South African Police Service (SAPS), saying that this is essential to restoring faith in the police and in government.
A Better Future For South Africa
Hill-Lewis concluded by saying that the DA is building a party that governs well for all, connects deeply with South Africans, and shows strength and principle in government.
He emphasized that hope for the future will not come from speeches alone, but from hard work, including registering voters, winning wards, and fixing municipalities.
