Yusuf Maart, the former Kaizer Chiefs captain, has spoken out about the intense scrutiny he faced during his time at the club. Despite making an instant impact after joining in 2022, his form dipped, and he found himself under fire from fans and critics alike.
Maart’s journey with Kaizer Chiefs was marked by highs and lows. He scored a stunning long-range winner against rivals Orlando Pirates, a goal that will be etched in the memories of fans for a long time. However, his fortunes soon took a turn for the worse, and he struggled to find consistency on the pitch.
After being handed the captain’s armband in 2024, the pressure mounted, and Maart faced criticism from sections of the fanbase. Despite this, he continued to deliver in crucial moments, including a dramatic late winner against Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final. This victory sealed silverware for Chiefs and cemented Maart’s place in the club’s folklore.
Looking back on his time at Naturena, Maart admitted that the criticism he faced was challenging but ultimately motivating. In an interview with Soccerbeat, he shared his thoughts on the experience. “When I was at Chiefs, I was playing 90 percent of the games. People didn’t like it, you know, fans criticised me. There was one game where I missed a penalty and everyone booed me,” Maart said.
Maart revealed that the criticism fueled his determination to succeed. “At that time, it motivated me. I got excited because I was feeding off that energy. They never knew what I went through to be where I am today. They couldn’t break me, they made me stronger.”
Maart also explained that his decision to leave Kaizer Chiefs was driven by a long-held ambition to play in Europe. Maart said, “For me, it was an opportunity at my age.” He had recently signed a new deal with the club, but the chance to play in Europe was too good to pass up.
Maart shared that the coaching staff at Kaizer Chiefs were keen for him to stay, but he felt the time was right to take the leap. “The Chiefs coaches asked me to stay, but I said it’s an opportunity I don’t want to miss…to play in Europe and see what it feels like.”
With Maart now playing for Austrian side SV Ried, the question remains whether he will return to Kaizer Chiefs in the future. For now, he is focused on his new challenge in Europe, and only time will tell what the future holds for this talented midfielder.
