Orlando Pirates fans are singing the praises of their Soweto rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, after Amakhosi’s 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.
This result has had a significant impact on the Betway Premiership title race, swinging momentum in favour of the Buccaneers. With a superior goal difference and a game in hand, Pirates now find themselves in a strong position as the season approaches its climax.
Pirates can still be crowned champions if they win their remaining three matches, provided Sundowns do not outscore them. Sundowns needed a victory to extend their lead at the summit and take a decisive step towards defending their title. However, it was Chiefs who struck first in the opening half, putting pressure on the league leaders.
The Brazilians responded after the break, with Brayan Leon finding the equaliser, but Chiefs held firm to secure a valuable point away from home. At full-time, Pirates fans were satisfied with the outcome, having hoped their Soweto neighbours would take points off Sundowns.
Pirates fans took to social media to express their appreciation for Chiefs’ role in the draw. “We’ll take the draw. Dankie, Khosi, you’ve done your part,” wrote one fan. Another fan added, “Those two points are valuable in the race for CAF football. Chiefs showed professionalism by ensuring they didn’t favour either Pirates or Sundowns.”
Another fan posted, “Kaizer Chiefs have done us a huge favour tonight, we can’t thank them enough. It’s in our hands now. I just hope Wadu doesn’t mess this up. We need nothing but wins from here.” Meanwhile, another fan suggested the result could influence Sundowns’ priorities, saying, “Sundowns might rest players against Siwelele, as their focus shifts to CAF. Pirates must take it one game at a time and win.”
With the title race finely poised, Pirates now have a golden opportunity to capitalise. For one night, at least, Pirates fans found themselves celebrating their fiercest rivals. The question on everyone’s mind is, can Pirates win the league now? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the title race is heating up.
