Two Runners to Take on Cape Town Marathon in Style
Two participants in the 2026 Cape Town Marathon are going the extra mile to raise funds for a good cause and set a Guinness World Record. Asgar Dalvie and Muhammad Sanglay will be taking on the 42.2-kilometre route this Sunday, 24 May 2026, dressed in a unique two-person costume to support the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
The marathon, which will see the duo donning a foam costume resembling the SPCA’s inspectorate vehicle, aptly named “Bokkie,” aims to raise funds for the animal welfare organisation. According to Sanglay, “Asgar’s up front, so he’s technically the driver. He drives Bokkie the way Capetonians handle a four-way stop: confidently, incorrectly and with full eye contact. Meanwhile, I’m in the back getting all the sweat, none of the fresh air, and I can only hope that a man that once got lost in Pick n Pay is going in the right direction.”
Raising Funds for the SPCA
The idea behind Bokkie is to highlight the important work of the SPCA’s inspectorate vehicle, which travels up to 60 000 kilometres annually in response to reports of cruelty and emergency call-outs. Keeping just one vehicle roadworthy, licensed, insured, and operational costs R120 000 per year, with fuel accounting for R42 000 of that amount. Dalvie and Sanglay aim to complete the full marathon route in their Bokkie get-up and raise R1 000 for each kilometre they complete, amounting to the R42 000 needed to fuel up an inspectorate vehicle for a full year.
“We spent months training for the marathon,” explained Dalvie. “There was sweat. There was chafing. There was a lot of gas being passed, and unfortunately none of it was the kind that gets SPCA inspectors to a rescue. So, we figured we’d better actually finish the marathon and raise the real fuel.”
A Guinness World Record in Sight
In addition to raising funds, Dalvie and Sanglay are hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon completed in a two-man costume. If successful, they could become the first South Africans to achieve this feat.
