President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa will be holding its seventh democratic Local Government Elections on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. This announcement was made during an extended President’s Coordinating Council (PCC) meeting at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, approximately 26 weeks prior to the election date.
The proclamation of the election date is a significant milestone in the country’s democratic process. Although the date has been proclaimed, it is expected that Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will formally gazette it soon. Furthermore, the date will be declared a public holiday, ensuring that all eligible citizens can participate in the electoral process.
The term of all municipal councils is set to expire on 2 November this year. According to legislation, local government elections must be held within 90 days of the term’s expiry, which places the election window between November and the end of January 2027. As President Ramaphosa stated, “As 2026 is the year in which the local government elections are held, they should be held on a Wednesday, which is the middle of the week, on a date that I now determine as 4 November 2026.”
Upcoming Voter Registration Weekend
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has scheduled its first voter registration weekend for 20 and 21 June. This event is crucial in preparing for the Local Government Elections, where voters will elect councillors for municipalities nationwide, including metros, district councils, and local municipalities. The outcome of these elections will have a significant impact on service delivery and governance at the grassroots level.
The election results in key metros like Johannesburg will be closely watched, as issues such as service delivery, infrastructure collapse, and water shortages remain major concerns.
