Rassie Erasmus Honoured with Prestigious Award
In 2024, Rassie Erasmus received an honorary doctorate for his exceptional management of the Springboks during their 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup wins. This honour, bestowed by North-West University (NWU), acknowledged his significant standing in international rugby coaching, his drive for diversity and inclusion, and his commitment to social responsibility.
Erasmus is now set to receive another prestigious award, the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold, which is South Africa’s highest civil honour. This award, announced by the presidency, recognises South African citizens who have excelled in fields such as arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, and sport.
Rassie Erasmus’ Inspirational Leadership
The presidency statement confirmed that Erasmus earned the ‘Order of Ikhamanga’ for his inspirational leadership in national and international rugby, which propelled the Springboks to repeated Rugby World Cup Championships. The statement read: “Johan Rassie Erasmus: For his inspirational leadership in national and international rugby that has propelled the Springboks to repeated Rugby World Cup Championships. Victory on the field of play has advanced social cohesion among South Africans and raised the nation’s esteem in the international community.”
A Prestigious Honour
President Cyril Ramaphosa will bestow the Order of Ikhamanga, along with other national orders, on deserving recipients. These national orders are the highest awards that South Africa, through the President, bestows on citizens and eminent foreign nationals who have contributed to the advancement of democracy and improved the lives of South Africans. The orders also recognise individuals who have contributed to building a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and prosperous South Africa, as envisaged in the Constitution.
