MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro Ditches Efficiency Cores for a 2nm Gamble

MediaTek put more than 33 billion transistors on TSMC’s 2nm process yesterday and called it the Dimensity 9600 Pro. The Geekbench numbers will dominate every headline about it. What caught my eye is what’s missing, because this chip has no efficiency cores at all.

For over a decade, every serious mobile SoC has carried a cluster of small, frugal cores to handle background tasks and light loads. MediaTek deleted them entirely. The CPU is nine big cores: two Arm C2-Ultra units peaking at 4.55 GHz, three C2-Pro cores at 4.35 GHz, and three more C2-Pro cores at 3.1 GHz. That’s the boldest architectural swing any phone chipmaker has attempted since big.LITTLE, and it only works if 2nm is as efficient as MediaTek needs it to be.

What MediaTek actually shipped

The paper specs are strong. Against the Dimensity 9500, the 9600 Pro claims 17% faster single-core and 15% faster multi-core performance, with Geekbench 6.4 scores of 4,276 and 12,650 behind them. Peak multi-core power supposedly drops up to 61%. The Mali-G2 Ultra NX GPU adds 27% peak performance and 24% better efficiency, enough to push 185 fps gaming.

Around the CPU sit some genuine firsts: LPDDR6 memory running 33% faster than LPDDR5X, UFS 5.0 storage, and a dual-NPU design built to run models up to 30 billion parameters on device. The Imagiq 1290 ISP handles native 4K240 slow motion. A companion Dimensity 9600M brings the same 2nm node to the wider flagship tier.

One caution from my own digging. When this chip surfaced in August as an engineering sample, its benchmark scores sat well below the figures announced on Monday. That gap usually closes with final silicon and OEM thermal tuning, but it’s a reminder that launch slides and shipping phones are different products.

Where the bet could break

An all-big-core design handles bursts beautifully. Sustained work in a warm hand is the problem, because frequency scaling is a blunter tool than a dedicated little cluster. A mixed-core chip offloads background tasks downward to save power and heat. The 9600 Pro can only slow everything down, and Android flagships have a long, ugly history of throttling fast in exactly those conditions.

So I care less about the 4,276 Geekbench score than about whether the power claims survive contact with a retail phone. If that 61% peak reduction holds through a 30-minute gaming session at room temperature, throttling stops being a worry. If it was measured on a cooled demo unit, we’ll get the usual launch-week gap between slides and thermals. I’ve watched this movie enough times to wait for retail hardware.

Then there’s money. The 9600 Pro reportedly costs around $220 per chip, a record for MediaTek and close to Qualcomm’s top-end pricing. The company built its premium push on flagship silicon for less. At $220 a chip, that pitch gets complicated, and it lands in a market where flagship prices were already climbing, something we felt directly with the iPhone 18 Pro price hike in South Africa. Don’t expect phones built on this chip to be bargains.

Availability skews Chinese first. Oppo has confirmed the Find X10 Pro Max as the launch device, with Vivo expected to follow before the year is out. Broad Western availability will likely lag by months, which is the pattern for every recent Dimensity flagship.

What I’d actually watch

Not the launch benchmarks. Watch three things instead. Sustained throttling curves from retail units, because that’s where all-big-core designs live or die. Whether the claimed 40% lower always-on AI power translates into real battery life once agentic features run in the background. And whether OEMs actually exploit MediaTek’s Native AI Architecture, the fused CPU, NPU, GPU and ISP scheduling meant to make on-device assistants feel instant. Fused hardware is only as good as the software that uses it.

The trickle-down matters too. Give it 12 to 18 months and 2nm plus LPDDR6 reaches the midrange, where comparisons like our Redmi Note 17 5G vs Galaxy F70 Pro breakdown start looking very different.

My verdict for now: this is the most interesting chip announcement of 2026 and the most fragile. If TSMC’s 2nm node delivers at real clocks, MediaTek finally has a genuine sustained-performance fight with Qualcomm on its hands. If it throttles, efficiency cores will quietly reappear in the Dimensity 9700 and everyone will pretend this never happened. I’d hold the excitement until the Find X10 Pro Max has spent a week in someone’s pocket. Honestly, so should you.
