Tau, Ex-Chiefs Star Now Free Agents

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Percy Tau and Njabulo Blom have parted ways with Vietnamese club Nam Dinh FC after just one season. This comes as no surprise, given the club’s recent squad overhaul.

Tau had a decent run, making 22 appearances, scoring once, and providing four assists during his time in Vietnam. However, his short spell was not enough to save him from being released. The former Al Ahly and Brighton & Hove Albion star arrived with high expectations but failed to deliver.

Njabulo Blom, on the other hand, struggled with injuries throughout his time in Vietnam. Reports suggest the midfielder failed to establish himself due to a lack of game time, leading to the club’s decision not to retain him. Blom had left Kaizer Chiefs last season to join Nam Dinh FC.

What’s Next for Tau and Blom?

Percy Tau has enjoyed a remarkable career since leaving Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018. His move to Club Brugge saw him compete at the highest level, including UEFA Champions League clashes against giants such as Real Madrid. At the time, Tau appeared destined for an even bigger breakthrough in Europe.

However, his career momentum slowed after being recalled by Brighton. Limited game time in England eventually led to his move to Al Ahly. Although Tau won several trophies in Egypt, many believe he never fully developed into the player many expected him to become. His performances also saw him lose his place in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Tau was left out of South Africa’s last AFCON squad and now appears unlikely to feature in the country’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Last year, Percy Tau was linked with a move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. At the time, he was seen as a possible marquee signing, but with his stock having fallen in recent years, it remains to be seen whether Amakhosi would still consider making a move for the experienced attacker.

Possible Next Steps for the Duo

As for Njabulo Blom, his future is also uncertain. The midfielder will be looking to revive his career after a disappointing spell in Vietnam. Both Blom and Tau will be hoping to find new clubs soon, where they can rediscover their form and contribute to their teams’ success.
