Samsung Roasted the iPhone Duo While Quietly Supplying Its Screens

Samsung Roasted the iPhone Duo While Quietly Supplying Its Screens

Samsung’s social team spent yesterday’s Apple event in full attack mode, and the “reheating our leftovers” post is already the funniest thing either company has said all year. It’s also the least honest. While Samsung’s account was posting memes about copycats, Samsung Display was manufacturing the exact panels that make the iPhone Duo fold. The rivalry is real. The beef is theater.

The roast itself was genuinely good

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo at its Surprise and Shine event on September 9, with a 5.4-inch cover display, a 7.6-inch inner screen, and a $1,999 starting price. Pre-orders open October 16 and the phone hits shelves October 23. Within hours, Samsung’s account called the whole thing leftovers, then kept swinging.

“So far, so same #ItsTimeToSwitch” came next. Then an apology to Duolingo for the stolen name, tagged #Solidarity, and a pointed jab about bedside clock mode, which is such a specific Galaxy feature that only foldable owners felt it. Duolingo clapped back within the hour, because of course it did.

I spent a good chunk of last night in that thread. Tens of thousands of likes, replies calling it an “unhinged roasting spree” and “chose violence,” plus the usual crowd insisting a trillion-dollar company posting memes is pathetic. Both camps have a point, which is exactly why it traveled.

Here’s what most of the coverage missed. Days before the event, Samsung’s R&D lead Hee-Cheul Moon said in a pre-event interview that competition is “absolutely welcome” and that weight is the key value metric for foldable buyers. So the executives rolled out a welcome mat while the social team threw tomatoes. That’s not a split personality, that’s a strategy. The mat is for Apple’s engineers, the tomatoes are for the timeline.

The burn that pays Samsung’s bills

Samsung Display holds a multi-year exclusive deal to supply the iPhone Duo’s panels. Every Duo Apple sells deposits money at Samsung, and every jab about the Duo’s heft is partly a critique of hardware Samsung built. You can roast your own supplier, I suppose, but the receipts cut both ways.

The stakes explain the tone. Samsung has owned foldables alone since the original Galaxy Fold launched in September 2019, and it leads the category today with roughly 38% share. Forecasts now circulating put Apple near 40% within a year of launch. That’s not banter territory. That’s an existential threat, and rattled companies post memes.

Credit where it’s due, the technical critique is legitimate. The Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899 and is measurably lighter and thinner than the Duo. We broke down exactly where each phone wins in our Z Fold8 Ultra vs iPhone Ultra comparison. Weight matters when you fold a phone two hundred times a day, and Moon isn’t wrong about that.

Then the replies turned on Samsung

Scroll deeper into the thread and the mood shifts fast. Foldable owners didn’t show up for jokes, they showed up with repair bills. One Fold owner says his phone died inside three months, and that Samsung first blamed liquid damage before quoting more than $1,200 to fix it. That story sat directly under a post mocking Apple for copying clock mode.

That’s Samsung’s open wound. Apple reportedly engineered around the crease and hinge fragility that has haunted every Galaxy Fold generation, and accepted a heavier phone as the price. If the Duo survives the kind of abuse that kills a Fold at month three, the leftovers joke ages terribly. Durability marketing is a dangerous game in this category. Apple already paid a €10 million fine over iPhone waterproofing claims, so nobody here should be throwing stones about bold promises.

The name is its own mess. Microsoft shipped a Duo in 2020, Duolingo has been a Duo forever, and now Apple is one too. Samsung trolling Duolingo was the funniest beat of the day, and also a reminder that nobody in this industry owns an idea for long, naming ones included.

The leftovers post deserves every like it got, and Samsung’s social team earned their salary yesterday. But watch October 16. If pre-orders run hot and the Duo’s hinge survives its first winter in real pockets, these jokes become a museum exhibit from the exact moment Samsung’s monopoly ended. The question was never whether Apple copied Samsung. It’s whether seven years of a head start taught Samsung to build a foldable people actually trust, and the replies under its own victory lap suggest the answer is not yet.
